Career development is a deep personal focus for people no matter whether they are in the early stages of their career or in later stages. Many people have the drive to devote countless hours and abundant attention to the development of their resume.
A career is a long-term path of work that is required to accomplish two things:
- An outlet to express an interest or passion.
- An income stream that supports a sufficient quality of life.
Sometimes your career can become painful for you. This often happens when the career is not progressing down the path that you expected to travel. In hindsight, everyone’s career has some element of serendipity that could not be planned. Often, from that randomness comes very interesting twists and turns in a person’s life story.
When your career is painful for you, it’s likely that the career has become a significant piece of your identity. Your identity is a story about who you are. It was invented by you, your family, and you colleagues. Don’t worry, you can still be you, even when your identity changes.
To allow for growth during career changes, you can learn to identify yourself in ways that don’t include your knowledge, skills, and abilities. For some, this may seem like an impossible task, but rest assured you can be all that you are without your resume backing you up.
MindSET Your Manners, Chapter 4: Fortress of Belief, handles the idea of your career and your identity.
